This traditional African instrument is a Kalimba or Finger Piano. It is handmade in Kenya, East Africa. The instrument measures 7 by 5 by 1.5 inches. The design on the hollow box will vary slightly as each is unique. These are crafted around the Kenya / Tanzania border, the metal tongs are salvaged from scrap metal.

I like the idea of supporting Kenyan craftsmanship, independence and business, BUT, this thumb piano had defects that were apparent as soon as I opened the package. Some of the "keys" looked and sounded great, others were actually touching each other and had no musical sound. I don't believe this defect was caused by shipping, it appears that there was no quality control where it was built.
